Tile Calculator

Last updated: 12 August 2026

Work out how many tiles you need for a floor or wall, plus the adhesive and grout to fix them. Enter your area and tile size, or pick a common size from the list.

Quick answer: tiles needed = area ÷ tile area, plus 10% wastage (15% for diagonal or patterned layouts). A 10 m² floor in 600×600mm tiles needs about 31 tiles, 40kg of adhesive and 5kg of grout.

How the calculation works

We multiply your area by the wastage allowance, then divide by the area of a single tile and round up. Wastage covers cuts at edges, breakages and the spare tiles you should keep for future repairs.

Adhesive is estimated at about 4kg per square metre for wall tiles on a flat surface and 6kg per square metre for floors, which use a deeper notched trowel. Grout is roughly 0.5kg per square metre for typical joint widths — wider joints and larger format tiles use more.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need per square metre?

Divide 1 by the tile area in square metres. A 600 x 600mm tile is 0.36 square metres, so you need 2.8 per square metre. A 300 x 300mm tile is 0.09 square metres, so 11.1 per square metre.

How much wastage should I allow for tiles?

Allow 10% for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal or patterned work, and up to 20% in complex rooms with many cuts. Always keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs, since shades vary between batches.

How much tile adhesive do I need per square metre?

Roughly 4kg per square metre for wall tiles and 6kg per square metre for floor tiles, which need a deeper notched trowel. Large format tiles and uneven substrates use more. A 20kg bag typically covers 3 to 5 square metres.

How much grout do I need?

About 0.5kg per square metre for standard tiles with 2 to 3mm joints. Wider joints, thicker tiles and small mosaic formats significantly increase grout use.

How do I calculate tiles for a bathroom?

Calculate each wall separately (length x height), add them together, then subtract the door, window and any area behind a bath panel or vanity. Add the floor as a separate calculation, since floor tiles need more adhesive.
